Voices from the past: my own story of the making and preserving of recorded oral histories | 7pm
Stephen Pedrick is a local historian specialising in oral history. Born in Kingsbridge, his family go back almost exclusively in the South Hams for many generations. He has a deep interest in genealogy and local history, and undertook extensive research in the Westcountry Studies Library, and Tree House in Exeter, from his early twenties. In 2003 he launched a project to collect hundreds of recorded stories from people living in the South Hams, and their memories have formed the basis of a series of books: ‘A Century of Memories’, ‘Daishels and Figgy Duff’ and ‘Brown Bods and the Scissor Grinder’. In this lecture, Stephen will talk about his own story, from local historian to author, and will recount some of his favourite stories from those he has collected.
