Shilstone Garden Tour | 21.04.24

Shilstone House occupies a truly exceptional site, at the head of a steep sided valley containing evidence of occupation from later prehistory to the present day. The landscape here is rich in archaeology and through both excavation and geophysical survey we have been able to reveal its history and development.

On Sunday 21st April at 2:30pm Lucy Fenwick, the owner of Shilstone will lead a guided tour of Shilstone House and gardens. Guests will explore the history of the site through its surviving archaeology and rare architectural features before seeing the results of the restoration, including the recently completed panelled drawing room.

Prince Maurice’s Invasion of Devon 1643 | 04.04.2024

Plymouth-based Philip Photiou is the author of ‘Plymouth’s Forgotten War’ and he presents historical podcasts about the Civil War and the Second World War in Plymouth and the surrounding areas. He also leads monthly tours of Drake’s Island, the Hoe, The Barbican and Plymstock. In this fascinating talk, he brings to life the royalist invasion of Devon in 1643, when Prince Maurice’s army invaded Exeter, Dartmouth, and towns in North Devon, and the ensuing siege of Plymouth in the winter of that year.

Tithe Barns of Devon | 07.03.2024

Tithe Barns were medieval structures built to store tithes – a system of taxation enforced by the church whereby one tenth of a farmer’s produce was offered as payment. Joseph Rogers, author of the 2021 book Tithe Barns, talks about their origins and their use in later centuries with a focus on those in Devon and surrounding counties that remain today. Joseph lived in East Devon for 15 years and presented at Shilstone in March last year for the Buildings Section of the Devonshire Association.
